51 in concord and oakland, 47 in livermore, san francisco at 49. we are drive for the most part with the few showers over the santa cruz mountains and along the coast from elk not a -- el granada and half moon bay. the russian river crested at 10:45 pm and will stay above flood stage all day and dropping below flood stage at midnight tonight. the weather headlines, dry today with sun, sunny tomorrow with clouds increasing tomorrow with this next weather system bringing the return of the rain late friday night into wmeho cominupa few minulet's ca for loataffi. >> we have our second traffic alert for the morning eastbound 580 at 98 with the vehicle fire

engulfed in flames at one point and fire crews are still blocking the two right lanes and this is now a fatality. they are running the traffic, holding back vehicles to work on the trouble spot to try to get the lanes reopened but right now two lanes completely shut down. this is the non-commute direction but we will see easier conditions as the morning progresses. westbound 580 not showing any trouble spots. at the bay bridge traffic is moving okay with no metering lights yet, backed up just past the parking lot but that will change quickly with more cars hitting the roadways. we get have a very serious accident at the berkeley curb with a lanes shut down but it is now reopened. if you're accessing the east shore freeway, you should be good to go with no delays off

of 80. we have delays on 580 at the altamont pass, slow-and-go out of tracy from mountain house. it gets much better when you get the dublin interchange. we have more on the breaking news in emeryville. three people are dead after the suv beardall the roadway -- veered off the roadway, at interstate 80 and powell street pending them under the big rig. >> based on the preliminary investigation the driver of the big rig appeared to have stopped on the shoulder and was part and he was sleeping. >> chp said afford person in the suv survived and was brought to the highland hospital in oakland with critical injuries. it is unclear what caused the

suv to veer off the roadwa. thousands of homes around the russian river underwater and we have kpix 5 jackie ward with more . >> reporter: the russian river looks more like a lake this morning but the water levels are dropping already. the water level crested last night. you can see where the water is dropping right now and unofficially the sonoma county road crew said that levels have dropped a couple of feet which is probably the case year. look at this watermark on the side of the barn, and this area desperately needed a break from the rain. there are many cars, homes and businesses swallowed up by the russian river. in some areas and even entire communities are cut off by the mud.

it is startling to see even for the people that have lived here for decades. >> i have never seen this slide, and i've been here since 98 and i've never seen this on maze canyon road. >> i've never seen mudslides like this. >> reporter: today sonoma county officials are telling people to stay off of the roads if possible. they are hoping that crews can get this cleaned up for this incredible mess because what you're looking at, as you come back live in forestville, you can see it is an absolute mess. this is supposed to be a vineyard with a barn, shed, and we have the porta-potties floating and it is disgusting. the closest you can get the guerneville is waller road. we made it to the farmhouse inn, but for the normal cars

in this morning's health watch a number of hiv infections nationwide have stalled and no longer declining. the hiv cases have increased among african-americans and latinos. it finds effective prevention and treatment options not reaching the rural areas. the exercise with high burst of energy could increase the colon cancer cells. those participating in the high intensity interval training experience have slower cancer growth. the plant-based meals help those with diabetes produce their own insulin. researchers studied the participants with the tofu based veggie burger and it is evidence that the plant-based diet should be the frontline treatment for type ii diabetes. southwest airlines has won approval from the faa to offer troops from california to

hawaii. the flights will be offered from several california airports soon including oakland international and banana san jose international. the company completed the first test flight from oakland to honolulu and the faa approval comes with southwest locked into a bitter dispute with the mechanics union and a large number of the planes have been out of service for repairs forcing the carrier to cancel hundreds of flights. lunch sounds good after that rain. >> we do have a drier day today and we will have more on that but there's a bad news report from the traffic center right now. at eastbound 580 and 98 we have a traffic alert in effect with two right lanes completely shut down. the crash is where the vehicle veered off the roadway and one person is reported dead at the scene at this serious accident with the two right lanes completely shut down until

further notice. they are running traffic grates, to try to slow down the traffic, slow-and-go through this area. stick with the surface streets on eastbound 580 and westbound 580, the commute direction, still light with spectators slowing. we have a backup just belong the -- beyond the 880 overpass. they will probably turn the metering lights on in the next couple of minutes. off of the east shore freeway traffic is moving okay and 580 out of oakland at least toward the bay bridge. looking at the east shore freeway, okay out of hercules heading westbound into richmond. we get have a pretty serious accident in the berkeley curb but all lanes are now reopened and traffic moving nicely along 80. we have an update on the closure at 37 with eastbound

lanes open at westbound 37 commuting out of vallejo into novato, the lanes are shut down between atherton and 101. you may want to take an alternate until they reopen the area but eastbound lanes are reopened and at richmond-san rafael bridge traffic is quiet with no delays commuting between the east bay and marin. thank goodness we do have drier conditions today. thankfully we are catching a break from the rain with drier weather today upping the rivers to receive. here's a live look from the salesforce tower camera with cloudy skies, 40s, 50s and even down to 39 in santa rosa right now. 47 in livermore, san jose at 49, 50 in downtown san francisco. concord and oakland, good morning on this thursday at 51.

we are drive for the most part with a few spotty showers across parts of the bay area. you can see 680 at danville and near san ramon a few spotty showers this morning. we will stay drive for today with partly sunny skies, drive tomorrow starting the day with sunshine and increasing clouds with this next system bringing a return for the rain rain and scattered showers on saturday. as we time this out on the futurecast, here we are at noon, sun and clear skies for most of the bay area. increasing clouds the 4 pm and friday is a sunny start with increasing clouds friday afternoon. we have another weather system rolling in late friday night into saturday morning with rain and scattered showers saturday. not a lot of rain with this next system, thankfully so, one

quarter up to three quarters of an inch of rain and the hills good see 1 to 2 inches. this is not a lot of rain so the russian river will stay below flood stage for the weekend. the record snowfall breaking the record for the snow is where he on record with more snow on the way. we have the winter storm warning until noon today at 4500 feet with new snow up to 10 inches, and for the peaks and hilltops, up to two feet of snow. tahoe report showing alpine meadows with 42 inches of new snow, kirkwood 28 inches of new snow, and more snow this weekend. high temperatures at mid 50s in san francisco, upper 50s in oakland, fremont and mountain view. it is about 60 in san jose, 58 at livermore and fairfield. enjoyed the sunshine today and tomorrow with rain, showers

at the santa cruz mountains, along the coast and 680 from danville down through san ramon with the few showers lighting up the hi-def doppler this morning. we catch a break from the rain today, dry conditions and sunshine through the day. sunny tomorrow with clouds increasing with this next weather system friday night into early saturday bringing a return of the rain. we will time this out on the futurecast coming up. a quick update on the russian river, it did crest at 45.38 feet last night at 10:45 pm. we will stay above flood stage at guerneville all day today, finally dropping below flood stage at midnight tonight. let's go live to jackie ward monitoring the russian river at forestville. you have been there two days and what are the conditions today compared to yesterday?

>> reporter: we drove past the road closure because news crews are allowed a little bit further up than the normal residence in the area. the flooding is so much worse and you can barely see the road, only a quarter left. we are in forestville right now about a half-mile from the farmhouse at waller road, 10 miles southeast of guerneville. this is some of the damage we have come across driving on river road. if you want to get anywhere close to guerneville that would take you almost an hour and a half with parts of river road that look like a leak. yet to go up to hillsboro, use west side or sweetwater springs road but even that is difficult with the water levels above or tv above flood stage. the water crested last night but a flood warning has been extended until this morning for those near healdsburg. some are hoping the worst is behind them. >> we are on the sunridge

avenue in forest hill. this is one of the first places that will flood. >> i came to this direction to go to work and the road closed just after me. >> the roads are very beat up in sonoma county with trees down, slides, floods and water over the road. >> reporter: the waters not the only thing traffic file their homes with mud, dirt, trees and a breeze taking over highways making it impossible to get anywhere. after the reprieve from the storm sonoma county officials are urging residents to be prepared for another storm system that could rolling in and the flooding situation will get better around here with the water levels finally below flood stage by tomorrow. that is at 32 feet but in the meantime, it is so nice to stand out here with no rain falling on us. it is not just for my own well-

being for the sake of all of this, the intense damage of.. >> it's great to get a break today and tomorrow and we watch the rivers continuing to recede. >> kpix 5 emily turner is also in sonoma county at sebastopol with the latest on the flooding conditions. >> reporter: i have to say exactly what exactly jackie said because it's nice to be standing out here without the rain. in sebastopol you can see the floodwaters in this market, all from the laguna day santa rosa wetlands, coming up yesterday evening today spilling into sebastopol, the town in the western part of sonoma county. it is overwhelmed the homes, cars and storefronts and leaving streets accessible only by kayaks in many spots. this area is blocked off,

highway 12 also closed as do all of these underwater streets. officials are patrolling the areas looking for people that refused to leave and made several sweetwater rescues. >> they think they can stay in their houses and that the water -- it is a slow death and will continue to come up. >> reporter: we know that 50 people yesterday had to be rescued by officials. so far everyone appears to be okay with the exception of one man that had hypothermia when he was rescue. we will monitor this throughout the morning to see the plans to get the power back on, and as you can imagine it will be a.morning for not only this area but for the other areas underwater. returning from sebastopol, emily turner, kpix 5. three people were killed after the suv veered off the roadway crashing into big rig that was parked at the

shoulder. >> the california highway patrol said the suv was pinned under the big rig. the fourth person in the suv survived and take into the highland hospitakld with critical injuries. the investigation led to the lane closures at i-80 and powell street but those lanes have been reopened. we have more on the residual effects of the traffic and your morning commute with gianna. >> we have a traffic alert out of oakland on 580. here is a look at i-80 were traffic is moving much better. due to that serious accident along 80 we had a serious backup beyond ashby but now traffic moving much better since they th u will get bogged down a little bit into emeryville due to the moral -- normal morning drive but an easy ride at least westbound 80 out of hercules toward the bay bridge toll plaza. we have a traffic alert for

eastbound 580 and 98th avenue with two lanes completely shut down. chp is at the scene with emergency crews, a significant backup building up to highway 13. use alternate route the if you can but this is the non-commute direction. if you're commute takes you out of oakland and the san leandro are castro valley, heads up on those delays. as we take a look at the bay bridge, metering lights are on backed up to the maze with some delays off of the approaches from 580 which is typical. it is busy through the altamont pass. i am anne makovec at the live news desk. president trump is on his way back to the u.s. from vietnam after his talks with north korean leader kim jong-un and cut short about two hours short, and they failed to come up with any deal. apparently kim wanted all

sanctions against the country lifted, and president trump said we cannot do that. tim only setting down one nuclear facility but wanted to leave several others running. that is no deal and no plan for another summit at this point. it is 5:38 am. here's a live look at capitol hill where the new gun back to bill liss moving forward, the first gun-control legislation considered by congress in nearly 25 years passing the house and heading to the senate requiring background checks for virtually all firearms sales and u.s. and right now they had to perform background checks for gun dealers to sell a weapon but th sellers do not have to and this bill will close that loophole. >> this will take more steps to improve the safety of the american people.

we have a traffic alert in the east bay. >> this serious accident has been here for quite some time, the second traffic alert this morning at eastbound 580 and 98. the vehicle caught fire after hitting a tree with a lot of activity on the shoulder. chp and emergency crews shut down completely the two right lanes with the ignition get backup behind seminary if not farther. chp is running traffic brakes to slow the traffic coming in hot. it yourself extra time if you typically travel here for your morning drive into oakland and san leandro. 880 is the best bet traveling on the south side. two right lanes are completely sat down eastbound 580 at 98. here's a live look at the coliseum with traffic moving okay in both directions. we have a few brake lights and

hayward but that's typical this time of the morning. the bay bridge is backed up to the maze with slow conditions off of the east shore freeway, as well as 580. the metering lights are on, busy into the tunnel but when you get past this area easing up nicely into san francisco. westbound 580 with a lot of company out of tracy, slow-and- go at least through north flynn road with a broken down vehicle that is not rocking the traffic, not blocking the legs but a bit of a backup. a bit of a backup on the toll plaza as well but overall not bad. you may want to try marin or the east bay instead of using westbound 37 with that closure between atherton and 101. westbound 580 is 43 minutes, 205 to the 68 bue good
